Outdoor Fields Trips – Nutritional Diversity & Opportunity

Learn ‘hands on’ to identify whole foods and their nutritional and medicinal application.

Discover the nutritional diversity and opportunity in our immediate environment. Usually at the conclusion of the session a brief cooking and/or preparation demonstration will take place.

We at MEDICUS will endeavour to consistently visit different locations in order to make learning about naturally occurring and available resources more enjoyable and varied.

What to bring?      ….Easy, BYO everything!
Everything you think you may need for a day of adventure, learning and fun. Start with food, drink, appropriate clothing, change of clothes, kitchen gloves, gardening gloves, garden tools (small spade etc.), small clear containers, re-sealable sandwich bags, permanent marker, pen & paper, etc etc.

event 2
The ‘A Sea of Nutrition‘ is an exploration of our vast and varied waterways. The onsite course aims to identify, harvest and prepare the excellent food sources that are so abundant in our bays, lakes and rivers.

During our ‘Sea of Nutrition‘ field-trip, we take exceptional care not to disturb the environment while going to or coming from a site. We diligently avoid and minimize damage to the area harvested and as such, there is a limit on the group sizes who can participate.

Recommendations

When participating in MEDICUS outdoor events, we strongly recommend that you adhere to our ’10 step recommendations’ listed below:

1. Check this website, email or telephone us to ensure the event is still on. Do not assume anything!

2. Check with the weather bureau for the latest forecasts. Visit the Bureau of Meteorology website at http://www.bom.gov.au/ to establish if the weather forecast will be suitable for you, your vehicle and/or craft. Make sure the weather is suitable for you, your family and your passengers, and that you are adequately prepared for it.

3. Be sun smart. Be weather smart. Remember especially to provide your own water resistant sunscreen SPF30+ and sunglasses. Remember: Slip, Slop, Slap! (Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat).

4. Make sure your vehicle is ‘road worthy’, and that you have fuelled up before coming to the meeting rendezvous.

5. Bring your provisions (food) requirements for the expedition plus 20%. It is usually a good idea to over cater than under. Where we will be going, don’t count on there being a ‘convenience’ store. Also bring with you more than 1.5L of water per person per day.

6. Be punctual- It is impolite to keep the group waiting.

7. Family group numbers may be limited as/when necessary. Repeat attendees are always welcome- but preference will be given to ‘first timers’.

8. If you are going to bring your craft (applies to ‘A Sea of Nutrition’ trips) make sure it is seaworthy, has all the necessary safety gear, you are licensed (as necessary) and that you have more than sufficient fuel for the entire day plus 50% fresh (new) fuel in a separate tank. Make sure that the essential spare parts you bring with you are correct and actually fit/work. For example: clean 2 stroke oil (if your engine is a 2 stroke), gapped new spark plugs, WD40 or similar spray, reasonable set of complete tools, and some spare parts such as wheel bearing for the trailer. If you need a list of what you may want to consider including in your repair kit- we are more than happy to help.

9. In some of the areas we will be visiting, pets are definitely not allowed (regardless of their obedience training). In those areas where pets are permitted- be considerate of others, you may love your pet but not everyone is comfortable with an exuberant pooch jumping on them. Our rule is strictly No Pets.

10. Smoking. The rule of thumb is that those that do not smoke considered having to breathe in someone else smoke not acceptable. We therefore ask you that if you feel the need to light up- distance yourself and make sure no one is going to be at the receiving end.

In short, try and be self sufficient and considerate of others!
We are all prepared to lend a hand at a time of need- but with the diversity of vehicles and crafts, it is very difficult to have access to ‘bits & pieces’ in the middle of the Australian bush or in the middle of Port Phillip.
